Heatwave in US, Canada virtually impossible without climate change'
The global warming made the extreme temperatures at least 150 times more likely to occur, Xinhua news agency quoted a USA Today report published on Thursday as saying citing a study conducted by leading scientists. "In the US, heat-related mortality is the No. 1 weather-related killer," said the study's co-author Kristie L. Ebi of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the University of Washington.
Deaths spike as heatwave scorches parts of US, Canada
Lisa Lapointe, British Columbia's chief coroner, said on Thursday 486 deaths had been reported in the province between June 25, a period in which about 165 deaths would normally be documented. The school named Marieval Indian Residential School operated from 1899 to 1997 in the area where Cowessess is now located, about 140 km east of Regina, the capital city of Saskatchewan province. Cowessess Chief Cadmus Delorme told on Thursday that technical teams started using ground-penetrating radar early this month to locate unmarked graves in an area of 44,000 square metres.

Indian-origin Justice Mahmud Jamal has been elevated from the Court of Appeal for Ontario where he has served since 2019. Justice Jamal was born in 1967 in Nairobi where his family had migrated from India a generation earlier. The family later moved to the UK in 1969. Statue toppled in Canada amid calls to rename varsity
Ryerson, a Methodist minister, was believed to be one of the key designers of the notorious indigenous residential school system in Canada, reports Xinhua news agency. In a statement issued Monday, Ryerson University President Mohamed Lachemi said the statue "will not be restored or replaced". The statue was toppled on Sunday evening after hundreds of people rallied in Toronto in honour of the 215 children.
