It talks about how the protagonist Balram Halwai manages to defeat poverty and turn into a successful entrepreneur. The movie was nominated for best on-screen adaptation.

Little Terrorist: Critically acclaimed film Little Terrorist was written, directed, and produced by Aswin Kumar, son of fashion designer Ritu Kumar, and was nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the Academy Awards. Jamal, a 12-year-old Muslim Pakistani mistakenly crosses the Indian border and befriends a Hindu Brahmin, Bhola, and the short film revolves around his beautiful journey.

Salaam Bombay!: Giving an insight on the deep-rooted illegal business of drugs, prostitution, human trafficking and child labor in India, Salaam Bombay is Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Mira Nair in collaboration with Sooni Taraporevala. The movie was nominated for Academic Award under the column of Best forgein language movie.

8. Smile Pinki: The Meghan Mylan-directed movie is a documentary of a small girl with cleft lips. It won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Short Documentary. ‘Smile Pinki’ is a short documentary about Pinki Sonkar, a six-year-old girl living in one of India's poorest areas with a severe cleft lip. The movie shows the struggle of the young girl and how a social worker helped the family to get the little child operated.
