With her power of delivering information and entertainment, the cinema has become the most perforable mass media. In its long journey, the cinema industry has nurtured many movies, that not just entertained us to no end but also became one of the biggest sources of education. When it comes to educating the audience about history, culture, and science via movies, nobody does it better than the Indian filmmakers. Whether it be movies about partition or freedom fighters, Indian filmmakers have produced many movies that leave no chance to explore the rich and diverse culture and history of India. The movies churned in India are so enriched that NCERT recommends these movies for their students. Here we bring you a list of the top 10 Indian movies recommended by NCERT for their class 12th students:

1. Garam Hawa: M.S Sathyu's Garam Hawa is that one movie that talks about the horror and chaos caused during the India and Pakistan Partition. Shedding light on the situation of mohallas and gallis of Agra, this movie portrays that historical event in the most heart-wrenching yet classic way.

2. Pather Panchali: Satyajit Roy is known as the father of Indian Cinema and his Apu trilogy proves why. In the first installment of his classic trilogy, Pather Panchali talks about the struggle of rural Bengal where an impoverished family ekes out a living in the shadow of better-off neighbors.

3. Zanjeer: To inject the image of an idealistic cop into the heads of its student, NCERt has been recommending Zanjeer since it was released. The story of Vijay Khanna, who has been transferred several times over the course of five years because of his honesty and loyalty towards his duty, never fails to pump honesty in your veins.

4. Rang De Basanti: The Bollywood industry is filled with movies talking about India’s independence and brave freedom fighter but Rang De Basanti is different from them. The movie talks about the struggle of Indian youth trying to fight corruption and crime while comparing them to the brave freedom fighter of India.

5. Sinhassan: One of the sharpest political dramas in cinema, Sinhasan accentuates the nasty power struggle and demands of a common man in Maharashtra. Although the film was shot in black & white, it did not shy away from depicting every shade of Indian society intertwined with politics.

6. Haqeeeqt: Set in the backdrop of the Indo-China war, Haqeeqat shows the struggle of an Indian soldier who sacrifices his life for his motherland. Being of the earliest and sharpest war movies, it has been the inspiration for not just students but also for Indian filmmakers.

8. Aakrosh: Aakrosh is not just a movie but the exhibition of reality in the rawest and hard hitting way. When a self-respecting tribal is wronged by the dominant social powers, a fresh law graduate defends his case.

9. Roja: Roja is a Tamil film set in the backdrop of the Indo-Pak conflict. It is the first time that Kashmir's struggle for azaadi has been well depicted on screen, addressing the issues of militancy. A man from the south travels north and is kidnapped; his safe return is secured by his wife Roja's love.

10. Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi: Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi takes us on a trip with a group of socially conscious youngsters, making it one of Bollywood's most powerful and thought-provoking political dramas. It is set in a period of emergency and exposes the Left's hypocrisy.
