Indian Automobile industry witnessed a roller coaster ride in 2020 with the context of car sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic scare. The car sale slowdown which was witnessed in 2019 carried onto 2020 and dipped down to zero during the lockdown. However, the festive season helped the auto industry to get back on its feet and start rolling again. Car sales picked up gradually towards the end of the year and did surprisingly better than the year-end sales of 2019. Maruti came out as the biggest winner of 2020 as it sold a staggering and has a total of 7 cars in the top 10 selling cars. Newcomer Kia did very well for its debut in the country with its SUV line Seltos sold units. Hyundai, with 2 entries in the top 10 had its second-best in terms of car sales. Here is the top 10 list of the cars that were sold in 2020.

10. Maruti Ertiga: Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga kicks off the list with 71,500 units sold in 2020. The minivan first launched 8 years ago, crossed a cumulative sales milestone of 5.5 lakh units last month. powered by the 1.5L K-series engine, Smart Hybrid and AT technology, ensuring a pleasurable drive experience, Ertiga is country’s best-selling MPV with 20% repeat customer.

9. Hyundai Grand i10: At number 9 comes Hyundai’s Grand i10 with 81,667 units sold in 2020. The Korean auto giant has enjoyed a good run in the Indian market with reliable cars over the year. The Grand i10 is not different either. Launched in 2013, the Grand i10 has undergone a change but remains one of the sportiest small hatchbacks in the market that has stood the test of times.

8. Hyundai Creta: Hyundai comes back at number 8 thanks to its well-known powerful SUV Creta. It sold a total of 86,397 units of Creta, mostly the facelift version of the SUV. The Korean company gave its bestselling Indian car a facelift after the dull period of lockdown was over which garnered a mixed reaction from its loyal customers. However, it still managed to have an impressive run in the Indian market.

7. Maruti Eeco: Maruti Eeco has emerged as the only utility van in the list of top 10 selling cars in India this year. Maruti sold 88,265 units of Eeco till November 30. Eeco has been one of the reasons behind Maruti’s robust sales figure. It is priced between Rs 3.8 lakh and Rs 4.95 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). The Eeco is available in four variants: 5-seater standard, 5-seater AC, 5-seater AC CNG, and 7-seater standard.

6. Kia Seltos: Kia sold a total of 91,417 units of its debut car Seltos for the Indian market. The South Korean automaker relished a good run in India. The Seltos SUV has literally pulled the carmaker’s share in the market single-handedly, given that the only other offering from Kia in India - the Carnival MPV - did not sell much.

5. Maruti Dzire: The top 5 in this list has been completely dominated by Maruti Suzuki. It sold 1,11,101 units of Dzire, the only subcompact sedan on the list. Country’s largest carmaker, Maruti has been reigning the auto industry for decades. Its Dzire has been hailed as one of the best vehicles for commercial purpose which even reflects on its car sales.

4. Maruti Suzuki WagonR: Maruti also sold 1,30,614 units of WagonR, which got a facelift recently. The WagonR starts at Rs 4.45 lakh and does not have too much of a difference for its top model which is decently priced at Rs 5.94 lakh. It is hailed for its spacious cabin and an above 20 kmpl mileage.

3. Maruti Alto: Alto, despite being one of the oldest models from the Maruti stable, is placed at number three with 1,33,682 units sold. It starts at Rs 3 lakh, making it a perfect buy for a middle-class family. It comes in both petrol and diesel variant and can give out a decent mileage of about 22.05 km/pl.

2. Maruti Baleno: Baleno, which recorded sales of 1,35,956 units, sells more in December. It starts at Rs 5.63 lakh and goes up to Rs 8.96 lakh for its top model. It can give out an impressive 19.56 kmpl mileage and has a low maintenance cost compared to its rivals in its class. It is sold in four variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha.

1. Maruti Swift: Swift tops the list with 1,42,624 sold units and seems to be the winner by a long way. Known for being reliable, efficient and safe, it makes up for the perfect family car for the middle class. It starts at Rs 5.19 lakh and has a mileage of 21.21 kmpl as per company promise. It comes in four variants: L, V, Z and Z+.
