We must therefore take a pause and look back at the events that occurred on this day, many years ago. Let's take a look at the events that have made 27th January a day worth remembering!

Beginning of Finnish Civil war (1918): It began on 27th January 1918, marking the transition of Finland from a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire to an independent state. The war was fought for control over the country between the refugee government, White Finland and the Finnish socialist worker’s republic, Red Finland. The war lasted approximately 3 months and 2 weeks, with the Whites emerging victorious.

US-USSR Outer Space Treaty inked ( 1967): The outer space treaty was signed between US and USSR at the height of the Cold War on 27th January 1967. Negotiated by the United Nations, this treaty forms the basis of modern day space law. The treaty prohibited the introduction of weapons of mass destruction into outer space.

End of Vietnam War (1973): On 27th January 1973, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, United States of America and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam signed the Paris Peace accords, thereby ending the war that had lasted almost 2 decades and establishing peace in Vietnam. The accords stated that US would withdraw all forces back within 60 days and the two rival powers would call for a ceasefire.

Maiden test-flight of Prithvi-II missile (1996): India first test-fired its Prithvi-II missiles on 27th January 1996. Prithvi-II is an airforce missile with a payload of 500 kg. The missile can successfully deceive anti-ballistic missiles

First Holocaust Remembrance Day (1996): Germany observed its first Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27th January 1996. The day remembers the persecution of 6 million Jews and the crimes inflicted on many others by Hitler’s Nazi regime. Since, 1996, each 27th January is celebrated as Holocaust Remembrance Day.
