Maruti Suzuki (MS) Dzire and Maruti Suzuki Baleno are two top selling models of the company in the compact-car segment. These two car models have consistently made to the top 5 selling cars since 2018-18, as per a report by Financial Express last year. Hence, in the interest of both automobile enthusiasts as well as potential buyers, we must compare the physical as well as operational features of the two car models to understand how they stack up against one another. On the basis of information in the public forum (zigwheels, autocar), this is how they compare with each other:

1. Engine: There are two variants on the basis engines: Petrol 1197cc and Petrol AT 1197cc. MS Dezire has a 1.2 Litre Petrol engine and an engine displacement of 1197cc. It has a maximum power of 88.5 bhp (brake horse power) at 6000rpm (revolutions per minute). It has a maximum torque of 113 nm at 4400rpm. MS Baleno has a 1.2 Litre VVT Engine and an engine displacement of 1197cc. It has a maximum power of 81.8 bhp at 6000rpm and gives a maximum torque of 113 nm at 4200rpm.

2. Transmission: Both MS Dzire and MS Baleno have manual transmission (the driver operates the gear stick and clutch in order to change gears) as well as 5-speed gear box transmission. In Petrol AT 1197cc, the transmission becomes automatic. Both the cars also employ Front-Wheel drive (FWD) system, where the engines provide power to the front wheels and the rear wheels move due to inertia generated from the former.

3. Fuel economy (milage): MS Dzire has a fuel economy of 23.26 kmpl and accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 12 seconds, as per test conducted by AutoCar. MS Baleno has a fuel economy of 21.01 kmpl and accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 12.36 seconds.

4. Steering and tyres: Both the cars employ electric power steering which provides significant improvement in fuel economy. Both employ tubeless and radial tyres. However, in terms of wheel size, MS Dzire employs R14 variant and MS Baleno employs R15. Pic: CarWale

5. Internal Features: Both MS Dzire and Baleno are 5-seater. Both also have same maximum fuel capacity of 37 litres. The boot space (trunk space) for MS Dzire is 378 litres whereas for MS Baleno is 339 litres. Both use Macpherson Strust suspension.

6. External features: The wheelbase (horizontal length between centres of front and rear tyres) of MS Dzire is 245 cm. The length of Dezire is 399.9 cm and witdh is 173.5 cm. The ground clearance (unladen) for Dzire is 16.3 cm. The wheelbase of MA Baleno is 252 cm. The length of Baleno is 399.5 cm and the width is 174.5 cm. The ground clearance (unladen) is 17 cm.

7. Variants: MS Dzire comes in 4 variants, LXI (₹6.09 lakh), VXI (₹7.19 lakh), ZXI (₹7.87 lakh) and ZXI More (₹8.63 lakh). MS Baleno comes in 6 variants, Sigma (₹6.14 lakh), Delta (₹7.01 lakh), Zeta (7.7 lakh), DualJet Delta (₹7.9 lakh), Alpha (₹ 8.46 lakh) and DualJet Zeta (₹8.59 lakh).

8. Additional features. The basic variant of MS Dzire (LXI) has airbags (for both driver and passenger), air conditioning. The central locking and power windows (for both front and rear) features comes with model VXI and above. The basic variant of MS Baleno (Sigma) has power windows (front), airbags (for driver and passenger) as well as central locking system. Power windows for rear seats comes with models Delta and above.
