The love blossomed between the two during the shooting of Sholay. It is said that Hema tried to avoid Dharmendra in the begining because she did not want to get involved with a married man but eventually, she gave in and fall in love head over heels.

As expected, Hema Malini’s family was against the union as Dharmendra was already married and had two kids. Her father had reportedly tried to push him out of his house once by saying, "Why don't you get out of my daughter's life? You are a married man, you can't marry my daughter."

The wedding was a private affair with only a few guests in attendance. The couple welcomed their elder daughter, Esha Deol in their lives on November 2, 1981. Almost four years later, on July 28, 1985, they became parents for the second time to Ahana Deol.
