The head of the state or the President is regarded as the first citizen in India. According to Article 52 of the Indian Constitution, there shall be a President of India and as per Article 53, all the executive powers of the Union shall be executed by him or her either directly or through officers subordinates to him. The importance of President lies in the fact that no law can come into force without the signature of President of India. The first President of India was Dr. Rajendra Prasad who took the charge on 26 January, 1950, soon after our constitution came into force. The tenure of India's President is of 5 years from the date he enters his office. However, he can get re-elected and also can resign from his office at any time by addressing the resignation letter to the Vice-President. The President of India is elected through Single-transferable vote. An electoral college, including the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament, the elected members of the assemblies of the states and the elected members of the legislative assemblies of the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry, cast their vote to elect the President of our country. At present, the President of India is Ram Nath Kovind, he assumed the office on 25th July 2017. He is the 14th President of India. Lets take a look at all the presidents of India from 1950-2022.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad (26 January 1950-1962): The first President of India who served for 2 terms and he had been conferred with Bharat Ratna in 1962. He was also the President of the Constituent Assembly.

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1962–1967): Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice-president of India and the second President of India. He was born on 5 September 1888, and this day is celebrated as Teacher's Day. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1954.

Dr Zakir Husain (1967-1969): The first Muslim President of India who was also an Indian economist. Dr. Zakir Hussain served his post from 13th May 1967-1969 as he died during his term. Soon after his death, V V Giri was made the acting President of India.

V V Giri (1969 to 1974) : Varahagiri Venkata Giri, fourth President of India, served his term from 24th August 1969 to 1974. He became the only person to be elected President as an independent candidate. He was also conferred with the Bharat Ratna.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1974 to 1977): Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the second President who died in the post of the President. After his demise BD Jattha was made Acting President.

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy (1977-1982): Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, the 6th President of India was the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He became the youngest President who occupied Rashtrapati Bhavan and contested twice for the post of president.

Giani Zail Singh (1982-1987): Before beoming the 7th President of India, he was also the Chief Minister of Punjab . During his tenure many incidents took places, such as Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

R. Venkataraman (1987-1992): A receiver of "Tamra Patra" for his contributions to India's freedom struggle. and Soviet Land Prize, R. Venkataraman was our 8th President. He was elected for the term from 25th July 1987-1992.

Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma (1992-1997): The 9th President of India, Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma had also served as the CM of Bhopa from 1952 to 1956 .

KR Narayanan (1997-2002): K. R. Narayanan was the first Dalit President of India and the first Malayali person to receive the highest office of the country.
