In a statement that came as a shock to many, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and filmmaker Kiran Rao on July 3 announced their divorce after 15 years of marriage. On Saturday, in a joint statement, the power couple revealed that they have decided to start a new chapter in their life while living separately, after 15 beautiful years of togetherness. They also revealed that they will co-parent their son, Azad Rao Khan, as well as continue with their professional partnership with Paani Foundation. Here’s a look at their journey from dating to marriage and now separation:
“In these 15 beautiful years together we have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy, and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect, and love. Now we would like to begin a new chapter in our lives - no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other,” a statement issued by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao read.

The statement revealed that Aamir and Kiran separated ‘some time ago and added that despite living apart, the couple will ‘nurture and raise’ their son Azad Rao Khan together.

The couple first met during the filming of Lagaan, in which Aamir played the lead role of Bhuvan while Kiran was one of the assistant directors.

In an old interview with the media, the actor revealed that he met Kiran during the filming of Lagaan but at that time, they were not sharing any relation. They were not even great friends. For him, she was one of the people on the unit.

It was after his divorce from Reena Dutta that brought Aamir came close to Kiran. He had met her only once before his divorce.

Once during an interview, Aamir said that he felt the spark between the two for the first time when he met her during his trauma period. He revealed he just talked to her for over an hour and felt relieved.

After dating each other for more than one and half years, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao finally tied the knot in December 2005. He has a son, Azad Rao, with Kiran.

Before tying the knot with Kiran, Aamir was married to his ex-wife, Reena Dutta, for fifteen years. The couple divorced in 2002. They have two children together Ira Khan and Junaid Khan.
