Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the new Parliament building on December 10. TATA Projects, which won the construction tender for 861Cr is set to deliver the new parliament by October 2022. TATA’s bid was the lowest among the 7 other construction companies during the bidding process. The four-storey building will hold seating for around 1272 people and would cost Rs970 crore in total. Om Birla while talking to news agency ANI on Saturday said that the new parliament building will be a ‘temple of Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and that it will reflect the ‘diversity of the nation.’ The new building will be 17,000 square metres bigger than the old one. It will be earthquake resistant and more than 11,000 people would be involved in the construction.

The theme of this construction will revolve around the cultural diversity of the country. Artisans and sculptors will be involved during the construction process to build-up the artistic sense in the building.

The structure will be built on 64,000 square metres of area. It will have the capacity to hold 1272 seats, 888 in Lok Sabha and 384 in Rajya Sabha. This is a huge upgrade to the current parliament which only accommodates 543 seats in total, a library, multiple committee room, a lounge for members of parliament, dining areas and a huge parking space.

As many as 2000 people would be directly and 9000 would be indirectly involved in the construction of the building. The new building will also consist of a grand constitution hall to display India’s democratic heritage.

The existing building will celebrate its 100 years anniversary next year. The foundation stone of the current parliament building was laid in 1921 by Edward Lutyens, and the construction took 6 years totalling the cost at around 83 lakhs at that time.
