The fact that Raj Kapoor made more headlines for his personal life than the professional front is known to all. No denying, that Raj Kapoor is one of the greatest actors of all all time. After making his big Bollywood debut with inquilab in 1935, the gave cult classics one after another. However, whether it be on-screen or off-screen, the actor was a die-hard romantic. The actor has been part of many love sagas but the most controversial one is his love affair with Nargis. The actor never failed to flaunt his love publicly and once even said his wife was the mother of his children but Nargis was the mother of his movies.

The love story of Raj and Nargis started on the set of Andaz. At that time Nargis was already a renowned superstar with 8 blockbusters in her kitty. Smitten by her beauty, Raj immediately fell for Nargis and she too reciprocated. Rest is all history.

With the success of their chemistry in Andaz, the duo delivered several cult classics one after another. After being paired up in many films, love automatically brewed up between the couple.

The couple was head over heels in love with each other, but while Nargis was all committed to Raj, Raj was married to Krishna and had their children.

Despite of being married to Krishna, Raj was giving falls hopeless to Nargis and even promised to marry her soon.

It took long 9 years for Nargis to realize that Raj is taking her for granted and soon she started feeling neglected in his movies as she was bored with the kind of roles he was giving to her.

In the year 1955 in Shree 420, Nargis was discontented with her non-glamorous role. Hence in anger, she signed Mother India, where she found the love of her love Sunil Dutt.

After Nargis took care of Sunil during his recovery process, Nargis and Sunil fell deeply in love and decided to get married in the year 1958.

Raj Kapoor was devastated on hearing about Nargis' marriage to Sunil Dutt. His wife Krishna Kapoor had said, “Night after night he would come home drunk and collapse in the bathtub weeping.” Raj Kapoor always felt that Nargis had cheated him. In an interview given in 1986, Raj Kapoor said that Nargis had cheated him by signing Mother India and he never forgave her.
