Rom-coms are a must to light up your mood on an otherwise stressful day, and this year was nothing short of a long exhausting day. Even though rom-coms have a reputation for being slightly predictable but predictability was all one craved at uncertain times this year. With a few sequels to teenage flicks, some hilariously dark romantic stories and bestseller novels turned into movies, the year was filled with stress busting watches. So, here are ten of the viewer-favourites and best rom-coms released this year.

Downhill A dark humour rom-com, Downhill is a remake of Swedish movie Force Majeure (2014) starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in lead roles. After a near-death experience with an avalanche during a family ski trip, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to re-evaluate their lives and their feelings for each other.

All the bright places Based on a Jennifer Niven novel of the same name, Elle Fanning as Violet Markey and Justice Smith as Theodore Finch, are two high-school kids separately struggling with dark times in their lives until their paths cross. They together build a beautiful bond, realising the importance of smallest moments in one's life in this unusual Netflix romantic drama.

Happiest Season This unusual holiday rom-com features an ensemble cast, with Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis in the lead roles, as a same-sex couple, Abby and Harper. Abby plans to propose to Harper at her family's annual holiday party but things get awkward when Abby realises that Harper hasn't come out to her conservative family yet.

Emma Set in 1800s England, Emma Woodhouse, played by Anya Taylor Joy, is a young woman who begins playing matchmaker, interfering in the love lives of her friends. With a screenplay based on Jane Austen's novel of the same name, this charming and witty movie explores the antics of romance in a different era from a unique perspective.

The Kissing Booth 2 The sequel to hit Netflix rom-com, The Kissing Booth, the second installment follows the story of Noah (Jacob Elordi) as he leaves for Harvard and Elle (Joey King) enters her last year of high school with her best friend, Lee (Joel Courtney) and a new eye-candy, Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez) joins their batch, making it an interesting watch.

The Lovebirds The Lovebirds can be best defined as a romantic-comedy meets murder-mystery, with Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani in the lead roles. The couple on the verge of breaking up, gets unintentionally involved in a bizarre crime scene, leading them to fight and survive the night, also giving their relationship another chance making for a fun hilarious watch.

To all the boys : PS I still love you Inspired by Jenny Han's second novel installment in the TATBILB series, Noah Centineo and Lana Condor reprising their roles as Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean Covey, come together for one of the cutest rom-com stories not just in 2020, but in years to come along with Jordan Fisher as Lara Jean's old love interest, John Ambrose.

The high note In an unusual pairing, Dakota Johnson, plays Maggie, an overworked personal assistant to Grace Davis, a musical superstar, played by Tracee Ellis Ross. This heartwarming romance musical teams up Maggie and Grace in a bid to make Maggie's lifelong dream of becoming a music producer come true, making for a beautiful and fun watch.

The half of it A coming of age rom-com, The Half of It, follows the journey of a shy, introverted, nerdy high-school girl, Ellie Chu, played by Leah Lewis, as she begins to build a friendship bond while helping a school jock, Pual, woo a popular girl, Aster Flores. Ellie also comes to terms with her sexuality on the way as she realises her feelings for Aster.

Palm Springs Released on Hulu, this feel-good rom-com features amazing performances by Andy Samberg and Cristin Milloti in the lead roles, as Nyles and Sarah respectively, two wedding guests who meet at Palm Springs and get stuck in a time loop developing a budding romance as they're forced to live the same day over and over again.
