Mamata Banerjee calls Sourav Ganguly victim of political vendetta

"I have a few questions. For whom a position was kept in reserve in the ICC? For whose self-interest Sourav was made the victim? Why did he become a victim of political vendetta? Will not the Indian cricket suffer for this? This is a shameful political vendetta," Mamata Banerjee said while interacting with mediapersons here on Thursday.

"Injustice has been meted out to him, while Jay Shah, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's son, will continue as the board secretary. I have no objection to that. But Sourav Ganguly too should have the opportunity to continue as the BCCI president," CM Mamata told media persons at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport before leaving for north Bengal on an official visit.

"He is the pride of Bengal. He had been in an important position in the BCCI. Probably, he will be occupying a more important position in the coming days. I would like to wish him all the best for that. No politics is involved with the issue," said Locket Chatterjee. However, she denied any comment when asked of the "more important position" whether she was hinting at was the chairmanship of International Cricket Council (ICC).

Amit Shah reached Ganguly's residence accompanied by state BJP President Sukanta Majumdar, senior BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari and head of BJP's IT cell Amit Malviya. He was greeted at the gate by Ganguly and his wife Dona Ganguly. The BCCI President said that since Amit Shah is a vegetarian, arrangements of a special vegetarian platter has been made by his mother, Nirupa Ganguly.

"The Home Minister is scheduled to attend a cultural programme at the Victoria Memorial on Friday evening. From there he might go to Ganguly's residence in Behala and is likely to have dinner there. He might be accompanied by BJP's Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta and the leader of opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari," a top state BJP leader told IANS on condition of anonymity.
