In a giant step towards enabling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream of making the country a global semiconductor manufacturing hub, Tata Electronics laid the foundation for its chip assembly and testing unit at Jagiroad in Assam's Morigaon district.
The event was graced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran. The ceremony marked the beginning of the largest investment initiative in Northeast India. The Tata semiconductor plant - valued at Rs 27,000 crore - is likely to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
The first phase of the plant is likely to be operational by mid-2025. Earlier this year, PM Modi virtually inaugurated a state-of-the-art semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, and an OSAT (Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility in Jagiroad in March. The investment being made at Dholera will be to the tune of Rs 91,000 crore, with the potential to generate more than 20,000 skilled jobs locally. In February, the Centre cleared three semiconductor plants – two in Gujarat and one in Assam – worth around Rs 1.26 lakh crore.
