The Supreme Court of India's YouTube channel has reportedly been hacked to showcase videos promoting XRP, a cryptocurrency developed by US-based company Ripple Labs.
The Supreme Court of India had been utilizing YouTube to stream hearings of cases listed before Constitution Benches as well as matters of public interest.
With the suo motu case of the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be dealt with, the hearings will now be streamed live on YouTube.
The hackers have apparently made the videos of previous hearings private. Now, on the hacked channel, a blank video with the title "Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC's $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION" is streaming now.
Pertinently, hackers scamming popular video channels is rampant and Ripple itself had sued YouTube for not stopping hackers who impersonated its CEO Brad Garlinghouse.
Over the past few months, according to a The Verge report, scammers have created official-sounding accounts for Ripple and its CEO Brad Garlinghouse. At least some of the accounts were stolen from successful YouTubers who had their accounts hacked, giving the scam artists hundreds of thousands of subscribers. From there, they could post videos offering big XRP rewards in exchange for smaller initial payments, bilking viewers who thought they were watching Ripple's channel."
Official sources reported that the administration of Supreme Court was already probing the hacking of the YouTube channel.
