Tech giant Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced Monday the latest version of its operating system, iOS 18, available as a free download offering iPhone users around the world new ways to personalize their devices. This allows users for even deeper customization, new ways to personalize their iPhone, by changing the Home Screen and Control Center; the biggest ever redesign of Photos, making it even easier to find and relive special moments; and major enhancements to Messages and Mail.
iOS 18, when it starts rolling out next month, will introduce Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system combining the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that is wonderfully useful and relevant while protecting user privacy and security, Apple said in a statement.
Users can frame up their Home Screen in excitingly new ways with app icons and widgets or create the perfect layout on each page, according to the company in its speech to users.
Alternatively, users can also choose how the app icons and widgets are presented: light, dark, or with a colored tint, and even make the app icons appear bigger for a new streamlined look.
They will also be able to access their favorite controls from the Action button. And for the first time, they can change the controls on the Lock Screen or remove them altogether.
The biggest update to Photos ever makes it easier to discover and reminisce about special moments. The beautiful, simplified layout puts the library into a unified yet familiar view. New collections like Recent Days, People and Pets, and Trips automatically keep the library organized with on-device intelligence," the company added.
Messages comprises formatting options like bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough in enabling users to communicate tone; all-new text effects bring words, phrases, and sentences to life; emoji and sticker Tapbacks give users endless ways to react in a conversation; compose an iMessage to send later.
For those times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren't available, Messages via satellite connects users directly to a satellite in space from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS.
The Phone app allows users to be better organized by recording and transcribing live calls so that important details may be recalled more easily in the future.
Scheduling to arrive later in the year, categorization in the Mail app helps users stay on top of their inbox.
iOS 18 is a free software update, available today for iPhone Xs and later.
