BJP's Kapil Mishra has won the Karawal Nagar Assembly constituency by more than 23,000 votes, leaving AAP's Manoj Kumar Tyagi and Congress' P.K. Mishra behind.
Celebrating his win, Mishra credited the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and vision for Delhi among BJP workers.
"The people of Delhi have put their faith in 'Modi ki Guarantee'. When PM Modi sought a chance from Delhiites, they decided in unison to vote for the BJP. Today, the people of Delhi have flushed out Kejriwal's deceit, corruption, and lies down Yamuna," Mishra said while recalling AAP's allegations of Yamuna being "poisoned".
"Delhi will now move on PM Modi's model," he added.
Mishra was an AAP MLA earlier, was fielded from Karawal Nagar after five-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht was given a ticket by the BJP for Mustafabad. Bisht also won that seat.
Speaking about the election results, Mishra said, "Everyone on the ground was saying that Kejriwal and Sisodia would lose. People of Delhi have cast their votes for clean water, a clean Yamuna, and better roads -- they have voted for PM Modi's model of governance."
Officially, the BJP has won 44 Assembly seats and has a lead in 4 others. The AAP has bagged 21 and is ahead in 1 seat.
Several prominent BJP leaders won with sizeable margins. These are Parvesh Verma (New Delhi), Satish Upadhyay (Malviya Nagar), Kailash Gahlot (Bijwasan) and Tarvinder Singh Marwah (Jangpura).
Several top AAP leaders, including the party's National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bharadwaj (Greater Kailash), and Satyendar Jain (Shakur Basti), faced major setbacks.
The Congress party could not open its account in the national Capital for the second time.
