Wayanad Landslides: Health Department Confirms 201 Deaths, 264 Injuries

With devastating landslides hitting the Wayanad district three days ago, a total of 201 people lost their lives and 264 were injured, reported the Kerala Health Department on Friday.

So far, 327 autopsies have been conducted, including on body parts, and 116 bodies were handed over to their respective families.

Out of the 264 injured, 176 people have been discharged from hospitals, two transferred to other medical facilities and 86 are still admitted in various hospitals within the district.

Health Minister Veena George announced on Facebook that ICUs have been arranged in government hospitals at Wayanad to treat the seriously injured. She also said genetic samples were collected from the 130 recovered body parts.

Earlier, Wayanad District Collector Meghashree D R had informed that attempts to identify the body parts through genetic testing are underway. Kerala ADGP M R Ajith Kumar said around 300 people are still missing.

District authorities also said 9,328 people have been shifted to 91 relief camps in the Wayanad district. Rescue operations continued in the face of challenging conditions—water-logged terrain—as teams searched through destroyed structures for survivors or more victims.
