PM Modi will not travel to UK in June for G7 Summit due to Covid-19 situation: MEA

"While appreciating the invitation to the Prime Minister by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to attend the G7 Summit as a special invitee, given the prevailing COVID situation, it has been decided that the Prime Minister will not attend the G7 Summit in person," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not travel to the United Kingdom (UK) next month for attending the G7 summit.

According to the MEA, the decision has been taken in view of the situation arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The G7 comprises the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. The summit will be held from 11-13 June in Cornwall, UK.

Though India is not part of the G7 group, UK PM Boris Johnson, as the host of this year's summit, had invited PM Modi to attend the summit. He had also invited leaders of Australia, South Korea, South Africa to attend the summit.

Boris Johnson had also called off his scheduled visit to India last month in view of the coronavirus pandemic. He and PM Modi held a virtual summit later on May 4.
