Close to catching Amritpal Singh: Punjab Govt tells High Court

The court, presided by Justice N S Shekhawat, was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by advocate Imaan Singh Khara seeking the release of Amritpal Singh from alleged police custody.  At the hearing, Punjab Advocate General Vinod Ghai confirmed that Amritpal Singh had not yet been arrested. 

The Punjab government on Tuesday informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that they are nearing the arrest of radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who has been untraceable since a police crackdown began against him and members of his group 'Waris Punjab De' on March 18, news agency PTI reported.

At the hearing, Punjab Advocate General Vinod Ghai confirmed that Amritpal Singh had not yet been arrested. 

However, according to the petitioner, who spoke to reporters outside the court building, the AG informed the court that they were on the verge of apprehending Amritpal Singh.

The judge requested an affidavit from both the AG and the petitioner and set the next hearing date for March 29.
