The Brutalist is the story of Hungarian Jewish architect László Toth (Brody) and his wife Erzsebet (Felicity Jones), who escape post-World War II Europe for a fresh start in America. Their search takes an unexpected turn when they meet Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), a mysterious and wealthy client who alters their existence forever.

Corbet, who previously directed The Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux, discussed why he was interested in period dramas, especially post-war ones. "It's a time period that has always interested me, largely in the manner in which post-war psychology had this phenomenal stamp and legacy on post-war architecture," he stated.

He also pointed out that The Brutalist is a period movie, and the characters are defined by their situation. "The film has a lot to say about the immigrant experience in America and how the American Dream ultimately fails Laszlo and Erzsebet Toth," Corbet said.

When the movie won three Golden Globes in January—Best Drama Film, Best Director for Corbet, and Best Actor for Brody—it attracted a lot of attention. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress for Jones, and Best Supporting Actor for Pearce were among the ten nominations the movie garnered at the 97th Academy Awards.
